MaxCompute MCP Server

Alibaba cloud MaxCompute (ODPS) MCP server implemented by python. Exposed over MCP by the maxcompute mcp server, that capability becomes something an assistant can invoke while it works, not something you go and do afterwards.

Its toolset

Everything the assistant can do here goes through one of these:

• get_latest_partition — Get the latest partition name for a specific table
• Input — - table_name (string): Name of the table
• Returns — The latest partition name
• read_query — Execute a SELECT query on the MaxCompute project, only SELECT query is allowed
• list_tables — List all tables in the MaxCompute project
• describe_table — Get the schema information for a specific table
• Tools — The Tools tool exposed by this server

Configuration

You will need 4 environment variables: ALIBABA_CLOUD_ACCESS_KEY_ID, ALIBABA_CLOUD_ACCESS_KEY_SECRET, ALIBABA_CLOUD_MAXCOMPUTE_PROJECT, ALIBABA_CLOUD_MAXCOMPUTE_ENDPOINT. The server will not start without them, which is usually why the tools fail to appear on a first run. Keep credentials in your client's env block or a secrets manager rather than in a file you might commit.

Adding it to your client

Setup follows the usual MCP pattern — install or clone the server, register it in your client's configuration file, restart the client.

When to reach for it

This sits in the developer tooling group, where several servers overlap in what they claim to do but differ sharply once you actually set them up. MaxCompute's toolset — get_latest_partition, Input, Returns and 4 more — is a fair guide to whether it matches your workflow. Caveats

• It runs with your machine's permissions. That is convenient and also the reason to think about what you point it at before you approve a tool call.
• Missing credentials fail quietly in some clients — if no tools show up, check the environment block first.
• MCP clients confirm each tool call by default. Leave that on until you have watched what the maxcompute mcp server does with a few real requests.
