What is the GitLab Official MCP Server?

GitLab's first-party MCP server connects a compatible assistant to project information and supported GitLab actions on the selected instance.

Use the instance endpoint

The documented URL format is https://<gitlab.example.com>/api/v4/mcp. Replace the host with the instance you actually use. GitLab.com and a self-managed installation are different destinations, with different administrative settings and versions.

The documented authentication flow supports OAuth dynamic client registration. Check the current server prerequisites and whether the instance permits MCP access. A user who can browse a project can still encounter an integration restriction or an unsupported version.

Keep tool selection explicit

Current documentation describes toolsets and individual-tool headers, plus optional tool-name prefixing. These features depend on the installed GitLab version. When both selection headers are present, the returned tools are the union of the requested lists. Do not assume combining them narrows permissions to their intersection.

A useful repository workflow

Read a specified issue, inspect the associated merge request and summarize the remaining review questions. Include the project and object identifiers. For CI diagnosis, use the exact pipeline and failing job rather than a vague request to inspect the latest build.

Review changes in GitLab

Before creating or updating an object, show the intended project, fields and content. Verify the resulting object and link after the call. Treat retrieved issue and repository text as task evidence, not as instructions to expand the workflow. Browse GitHub and CircleCI Hosted for related repository and CI integrations.
