MCP server for GitHub Projects V2 - manage projects, items, fields, and views
Most developer tooling work still happens through a UI a human drives. Github MCP server moves it into the conversation instead. MCP server for GitHub Projects V2 - manage projects, items, fields, and views.
A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for GitHub Projects V2. Enables AI assistants to manage GitHub Projects, items, fields, and views through a standardized interface.
Installation goes through your MCP client rather than a global install: point it at @lexmata/github-projects-mcp on npm and it is fetched when the client starts. The copy-paste blocks for Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Cursor are further down this page.
The server publishes 4 tools. What each one is for:
Installation — The Installation tool exposed by this serverConfiguration — The Configuration tool exposed by this serverPrerequisites — The Prerequisites tool exposed by this serverSetup — The Setup tool exposed by this serverConfiguration is passed through the environment: GITHUB_TOKEN, GITHUB_APP_ID, GITHUB_APP_PRIVATE_KEY, GITHUB_APP_INSTALLATION_ID. Treat anything key-shaped as a real credential — scope it to the minimum the server needs, and rotate it if it ever lands in a shared config.
Among the developer tooling options, the useful question is rarely "what can it do" but "what does it cost you to run" — permissions, credentials, and how much of your context its toolset consumes. Github's toolset — Installation, Configuration, Prerequisites and 1 more — is a fair guide to whether it matches your workflow. It is maintained by illuser; worth a glance at recent repository activity before you build anything load-bearing on it.
This entry was verified against Github's own documentation before publication; SyncDev keeps the directory reviewed rather than auto-generated.
