BetterMCPFileServer exposes local file operations through readable path aliases and a compact tool interface.
The project maps real directories to aliases such as projects or docs. An assistant can work with those aliases instead of repeating a user’s full filesystem path. The tool surface covers file content, writing, targeted editing, file or folder management and combined search.
Aliases make returned paths easier to read and can hide private directory names. They do not make file contents private from a tool call that reads them. Configure the intended roots and review the actual operations exposed to the client.
The README describes source installation and says a published package is pending. Package metadata supplies build and start scripts but no published binary mapping. Use the source workflow and the project’s build and start scripts, then connect the resulting entry point through the client’s stdio configuration.
Use a project copy with a small file. Search by a known pattern, read its content, make one targeted edit and inspect the diff. Test a missing path and an operation outside the intended root. The documented combined search can include metadata, which changes response size for large collections. Keep backups before write, move or delete actions. Software licensing and runtime behaviour should be confirmed from the linked project before deployment.
Check the linked publisher documentation and your connected client's tool list. Names and availability can vary with the server version and account permissions.
